At last, the election is over and I can get back to normal life again. Honestly, those last few weeks reminded me of late-stage pregnancy: thinking of nothing but that slowly approaching date, the mixture of dread and excitement, the utter inability to focus on anything else… Yes, I am thrilled with the results (except Prop 8 in California) but even if it had god forbid gone the other way I would still, at least, be glad that the damn thing was finally OVER.

Heads up, everyone: next week is Banned Books Week!
Just a quick post to remind you all that the big event is coming up, September 27–October 4, 2008. Head on over to the American Library Association’s website for more information and lists of frequently-challenged books. Needless to say, those who would ban books make me want to puke. I hope you’ll join me in reading some banned books, not just next week but year round, and encouraging your kids to read them too.

Weekly Geeks #10: Magazines
It’s been a while since I wrote a post for Weekly Geeks. The last few topics didn’t really “work” for me — but this week’s theme definitely does: talk about the magazines we read. In fact, I’ve been wanting to post about a particular magazine for a long time, but frankly I wasn’t quite sure how to approach it, because it’s… complicated.
Banned Books Week
Just a quick reminder to y’all that it’s that time of year again!
I had to scramble at the library yesterday because I’d forgotten, and I had Joey and Daniel with me. Off the top of my head the best I could come up with was In the Night Kitchen for Daniel, Iggie’s House for Lena, and The Chocolate War for Joey. I doubt Iggie’s House has ever been banned, actually, but it’s by Judy Blume and it was all I could find on short notice while simultaneously keeping an eye on Daniel.
What the Civics teacher said
I hope my dear hubby won’t mind me posting an excerpt from the email he sent out to his extended family.
Let me add a bit from a Civics teacher’s perspective. I’ve been showing Mr. Smith Goes to Washington to my four classes of ninth graders, as we study the legislative branch. We’ve been seeing it in chunks of 20-30 minutes, so it stretched over the last few days of class, and we had Monday off for an in-service, so today we’re finishing it.
Happy birthday, darling

Daniel is three today!
And what a perfect excuse to get on my homebirth soapbox.
When Daniel was just a couple of months old we thought he might have an ear infection and I took him to the ER.
Bookstore anecdote
Laura’s comment on my earlier post, “I was at Borders looking for something new . . . I browsed and browsed, getting more and more frustrated,” reminded me of a little anecdote. Here in Ann Arbor we are blessed with a couple of really good independent bookstores, so we’re not stuck supporting the big corporate stores (perish the thought!).
