And now for something completely different

Well, my last few posts were pretty bookish, so I thought for a change of pace I would tell you about my dear husband’s favorite website, instructables.com. Billing itself as “the world’s biggest show and tell,” this site offers instructions for all kinds of DIY projects. Some, like the aluminum siding made of beer cans, are very useful. Others, like the zen garden rake for your ashtray, are perhaps less so. All, however, are extremely entertaining.

Last week in Jamaica

Doggone it, I have searched high and low for the cable that hooks the camera to the computer and I can’t find it anywhere. So instead of posting pictures of our trip I guess I’ll just have to use a thousand words.

Tap-root

I’m sure the metaphor of man-as-tree is old as the hills, and we all talk about having roots, but Robertson Davies takes it further. It’s a major theme throughout his work, particularly in the Cornish trilogy. In The Rebel Angels Parlabane tells Maria:

Ordeal

We are making a point of saying Joey had “an accident with his bike” rather than Joey was “hit by a car” because even though it is true, it sounds so horrific.

We were very lucky. He is fine.

Sit outside with her on a beautiful June day that just happens to be the anniversary of the day you birthed your child, and tell her your birth story. All right, that’s all I’m going to say about that.

The scientist and the romantic

Wow!

Is this not the most stunning thing you’ve ever seen?

As you may have heard, archaeologists recently discovered this late Neolithic double-burial. According to the news reports, double-burials from that time period were rare. Huggers, non-existent. Archaeologists are removing them all in one piece to preserve their position, and hope to learn something new about Stone Age society in the process.

At the doctor’s office

with Joey, and I felt like Mr. McAfee in Bye Bye, Birdie. Do you remember him? He’s the father who reacts with such dismay and indignation when he hears the word “puberty” uttered in his presence.
