Why I dread Hanukah

Part of the Hanukah ritual includes singing a Hebrew song, Maoz Tsur. It’s a beautiful song, and some of the members of my family (not I) have really lovely singing voices and the ability to make up harmonies as we go. The problem is, the last verse contains the word fart. Of course, it’s Hebrew, so it doesn’t mean fart. But it’s unmistakeable.

Bookworm reviews a movie

We went to see the new Star Wars movie in the theater!

Two thumbs down. It was awful. Even aside from the ridiculously bad acting (I’m pretty sure Anakin had a fake English accent in the first few scenes, but it quickly evaporated) and the fight scenes that were waaaaay too long (this movie did not need to be 2.5 hours long), I have a major gripe about the way Natalie Portman’s character is treated.

A happy camper

Yesterday afternoon I finally figured out how to do a thing with CSS that I’ve been working on for weeks. Yesss! And then, yesterday evening, Steve and I actually got to go out on a date. We haven’t gone out on a date in literally months. My parents babysat, and when we got home they gave such a glowing report of how great the kids were — even the toddler — that I think I blushed. And we had a terrific date. We went out to dinner and a show. The show was a high school production of Hair. Not just any old high school, though: it’s the one Steve and I both went to, where he now teaches. One of the advantages of being the largest school in the state is that they’ve got a lot of talented kids (bigger pool to draw from, you know). I don’t think I’ve ever heard a better version of “Easy to be Hard,” the one song from the show I never liked. She was terrific! So, anyway, I don’t care if it rains all day tomorrow. I hope all you moms have a wonderful weekend too!

No, but I read the book

Green-Eyed Lady’s comment that she’d rather read the book than see the movie (which is how I mostly feel, too) prompts me to ask:

What are some of your favorite or least favorite movie adaptations of books?

Vanity Fair, to my great surprise

A long time ago I used to belong to the Quality Paperback Book Club. I would not even open the envelope when it came, so that when I got the book of the month in the mail it would be a surprise. As a result, I still have a bunch of nice paperbacks I’ve never read, ha ha.

In which the Bookworm goes to a show and gets surprised

Now wouldn’t that be a cute blog gimmick? To title every post in the manner of a 17th-century novel, “In which . . .”?

Anyway, I did go to a show last night. It was a community theater performance of Brigadoon, which I first saw performed during the summer of 1980 at my favorite place on earth. I loved it then — I was 13 and the guy who played Tommy was so cute. And what a romantic story, sigh.

Guilty Pleasures

Ok, we don’t have tv; we just use it as a video monitor. But we’re not totally out of it. For the past few evenings after the kids are in bed, Steve and I have been watching 3 or 4 episodes a night of the third season of “24” on DVD. And congratulating ourselves because we get to watch it all at once instead of week by week. And we can pause it while we predict what’s going to happen next. Of course, the rest of the world has already seen these episodes, but still! Read more on Guilty Pleasures…
