Wow, it’s been a busy week. A LOT going on . . .
1. I had the theater experience of a lifetime. God bless the University Musical Society, for bringing the Royal Shakespeare Society to Ann Arbor, Mich. They didn’t just come and do a couple of shows, either. They were in residence for three weeks, giving talks and lectures and demonstrations and so forth. And we saw Julius Caesar and The Tempest. In the car on the way to The Tempest, I must admit Steve and I giggled over the fact that while we would be watching Patrick Stewart (as Prospero) in the flesh, our kids would be back home with the babysitter watching him in X-Men 3. And The Tempest was, well, I can’t even come up with an adjective. All I can say is, at the end, during the applause, people were shouting not Bravo but Thank you to the actors. And Steve and I were quite literally trembling as we left the theater.

Yet another non-literary post from so-called Bookworm.
I took our dog to the vet yesterday morning to have a growth removed from her front leg. It was a small, benign growth; the main reason for removing it was because it itched and because if we didn’t remove it, it could, possibly, turn into something bad.

Happy 50th wedding anniversary to my tenth grade geometry teacher. Judging from the photo he’s still got the same toupee.
Apparently there’s going to be a revival of Inherit the Wind on Broadway, with Christopher Plummer as Clarence Darrow. What I wouldn’t give to see it!

to a new website I just discovered? It’s called Left Behind at the Fishbowl and it’s absolutely marvelous. The Fishbowl, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the University of Michigan, is the main computing center on central campus, so-called because it’s an atrium kind of thing surrounded by glass. So this blogger goes to the Fishbowl and collects the trash papers that students leave behind at the printers, marks them up with mordant commentary, and posts them on the web. Steve and I were positively howling with laughter last night.

Laura’s comment on my earlier post, “I was at Borders looking for something new . . . I browsed and browsed, getting more and more frustrated,” reminded me of a little anecdote. Here in Ann Arbor we are blessed with a couple of really good independent bookstores, so we’re not stuck supporting the big corporate stores (perish the thought!).

Many bloggers don’t like to use their real names. Some get wonderfully creative with the descriptive nicknames they come up with for their family members. I sometimes think I should refer to Daniel as, say, Tempestuous Toddler. If I told a story about Tempestuous Toddler’s desire to bring a bowl of grapes to bed, you’d know exactly what I was talking about. But if I brag that Daniel was actually gentle with the kitty today, you might think, big deal. Which one’s Daniel, anyway? The 10yo? The 2yo?

Last summer Lena started asking for violin lessons. My first reaction was no way! She was about to start first grade and no way was I going to add something as intense as violin lessons into the mix. I do not understand why so many music teachers expect new students to start in September. As if kids didn’t already have enough new things to adjust to! But Lena continued to beg for violin lessons. Joey takes piano, so she understands about weekly lessons and daily practice, and finally we agreed that she could start taking in January.
