Weekly Geeks #1

Have you heard about the Weekly Geeks challenge yet? Each week Dewey at The Hidden Side of a Leaf will post a theme or idea for a blog post. If you want, you can write a post in response to the challenge, and at the end of the week Dewey will collect them all and write up a carnival-like post about them. A lot of people have signed up already, and I think it’s gonna be fun! If you’re interested, you can sign up here.

Sunday Salon: American Pastoral

salon.pngI started Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, American Pastoral, this week. It’s this month’s book group pick. I was curious about this one because I’m on the fence about Philip Roth. That is, I thought The Human Stain was magnificent but I couldn’t even get past the first few chapters of The Plot Against America. Hmmmmm.

Dreamin’

Such a dream I had last night!

We bought this great big old house. The reason we could afford it was because it was located not in super-expensive Ann Arbor but in some very small town in Missouri. There were built in bookshelves and cabinets, a perfect kitchen, woodwork to die for, oh my gosh the master bathroom… There were three full stories plus a finished attic with nooks and crannies like you wouldn’t believe. Exterior views were also included: light blue clapboard, tons of windows, trees, nice neighborhood. The whole family was so happy and excited.

A mommy moment

So, here in Ann Arbor Mich we have our very own Rock Band School. It’s run by this guy, whom I’ve known since he was a little kid running around with my best friend’s younger brother. They arrange gigs, they have workshops on how to promote your band, how to set up your stuff on the stage, how to feed the band for $10 (“nutrition for starving musicians”) and how to withstand what they euphemistically call “the pressures” of being a rock star. :)

Covers!

I have my RSS feeds divided into two folders, one for work (mostly graphic design and web development stuff) and one for play (mostly bookish stuff). Rarely do the two overlap. Needless to say I was delighted when Smashing Magazine, on the “work” side, came out with “Excellent Book Covers and Paperbacks” for this week’s Monday Inspiration.
