Banned Books Week

2007 Banned Books Week: Ahoy! Treasure Your Freedom to Read and Get Hooked on a Banned BookJust a quick reminder to y’all that it’s that time of year again!

I had to scramble at the library yesterday because I’d forgotten, and I had Joey and Daniel with me. Off the top of my head the best I could come up with was In the Night Kitchen for Daniel, Iggie’s House for Lena, and The Chocolate War for Joey. I doubt Iggie’s House has ever been banned, actually, but it’s by Judy Blume and it was all I could find on short notice while simultaneously keeping an eye on Daniel.

I still have to choose a banned book for myself. Any suggestions? What are you planning to read this week?

I’ve been listening to a brilliant audiobook of Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried,” read by Dylan Baker. Apparently someone tried to ban this from a Chicago-area high school because it describes violent death during the Vietnam war. Imagine draft-age students being exposed to the language and routines of contemporary soldiers! How appropriate would that be? The ban was defeated.

Help! I need ideas! I’m hoping to hit the library tonight and pick up something. Maybe they’ll have a display.

Hope you are well. Second year of law school? NOT THAT EASY. Bunch of liars.

This is what I get for not doing daily blog rounds. Only NOW do I see I missed banned books week. Serendipitously, I read in Sunday’s paper about a controvery in the Grand Rapids school district…apparently the new American Lit. anthology they ordered contains an excerpted (and Pulitzer-winning?) play with a lot of foul language.

They are debating whether, if they can’t return the books for a refund, to *cut out* the offensive pages.

Catcher in the Rye? That was banned for a while, wasn’t it? I haven’t read it for a while but was thinking the other day that it’s a perfect autumn-y book…

What about The Handmaid’s Tale or To Kill a Mockingbird? Or Slaughterhouse Five. Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth is terrific. Or, since it’s October, what about Cujo, Carrie, or The Dead Zone?

I (re)read “Julie of the Wolves” and wasn’t thrilled. I’m going to seek out “And Tango Makes Three” for my 5 year old. :-)

Ok so I’ve missed ‘banned books week’(is this an American thing?) by a month, but nevermind! I’ve been reading ‘The God Delusion’ which I’m sure must be been banned somewhere…!
