Arrrr!

So, the other day I learned something astonishing, simply astonishing. My friend Les told me that her Nutrition professor told her the real reason why pirates wear eye patches. Not that they’ve lost an eye, no. It’s so they can keep one eye always adjusted to the dark. If they suddenly have to go belowdecks all they have to do is switch the patch to the other eye and lo and behold they can see just fine. Can you believe it?

And when I told my husband this thrilling tidbit, well, he didn’t take it so well. “Nah,” he said confidently. “No way. That would never work. Both your pupils dilate and retract the same. Unless you have a concussion.”

Not to worry. Les tried it. Bless her heart, she actually tried it. And it TOTALLY worked.

Who knew there was a real reason?

(I may just have to try it, too.)

I just have to add, that Steve was right to think it’s not normal to have your pupils in two different states of dilation. When I took the patch off in the dark, and both eyes were uncovered, it felt like I was blind in one eye (the one that wasn’t adjusted to the dark). After I came out of the closet, it took a few minutes for my eyes to resynchronize, and in the meantime my vision was very off…it definitely felt like something was wrong with my brain or eyes. Hmm, waking concussions…
    Weird!

That is so cool! No wonder they were grouchy (I’m sure the lice/fleas/bad diet/smell/etc. were all contributing factors.)
