Poetry Thursday #3

Here’s another one from Carl Sandburg (I promise someone else next week). I’m sharing this one in order to cheer myself up after a night where Daniel woke me up four? five? times requesting slight adjustments of his blankets and kisses on invisible boo-boos. I really like this one — poignance and happiness all wrapped up together.

Red-headed restaurant cashier

Shake back your hair, O red-headed girl.

Let go your laughter and keep your two proud freckles on your chin.

Somewhere is a man looking for a red-headed girl and some day maybe he will look into your eyes for a restaurant cashier and find a lover, maybe.

Around and around go ten thousand men hunting a red-headed girl with two freckles on her chin.

I have seen them hunting, hunting.

Shake back your hair; let go your laughter.

Nice choice. I like Carl Sandburg, but hadn’t read this one in a long time. My favorite parts are (the repetition/empahsis of “shake back your hair; lt go your laughter.”

Sorry you were awakened so often.

Me too. And — I know this is dorky, but — I always love it when poems have “O” in them. Why “O” should seem so much more beautiful and poetic than “Oh,” I don’t know.
