Poetry Thursday #1

Brought to mind after the morning spent with Lena: we cleaned her room top-to-bottom, reminiscing over stuff from long ago, particularly remembering when she was four and she and I, just the two of us, got on a plane and flew to California for my cousin’s wedding. I bought her a Beany Baby unicorn while we were stopped over in the Las Vegas airport. It was white with a pink mane and tail.

Sleep, darling

I have a small

daughter called

Cleis, who is

like a golden

flower

I wouldn’t

take all Croesus’

kingdom with love

thrown in, for her

– Sappho, translated by Mary Barnard

Rainbow is the name of the beanie baby unicorn, at least of the ones my daughters loved. Aren’t unicorns fascinating? Remember our kids when they were young is magic, too and particularly special to share with them. I’m warmed to read about you and Lena walking down memory lane.

It’s delightful to see you’ve decided to participate in Poetry Thursday after reading about that on my site. I’ve enjoyed writing poetry on my blogs for quite some time and love to read others’ poetry just as much. Are you participating in poetry thursday via their fantastic blog? If so, please read the email I sent you regarding link etiquette that is suggested…

There’s a treasure trove of interesting folks I’ve met via Poetry Thursday. When you visit my site, you will see a gorgeous Poetry Thursday button in my sidebar besides my poem for poetry Thursday. They are very friendly and flexible.

Julie, this is a lovely poem to share along with your memories! My daughters adored those unicorns, too. There’s that magical quailty about unicorns. We still have them. One is even perched on one of the bookshelves I can see from this writing desk.

Yes — unicorns are fascinating! And so are rainbows, for that matter. I wish they didn’t get such a bad rap for being cheesy, corny, sentimental, what-have-you. ;-) And isn’t the idea of a 7yo “reminiscing” sorta funny, too? I mean, it’s one thing for us moms to do it, but a little kid? :-)

No, I don’t think it’s funny that kids reminisce. They have memories, too! Many of us remember back to when we were one or two years old or even younger. I think it’s endearing that you two shared those moments and memories today. :)

Yay! You’re back! (And I am remiss for having not checked for a while to notice your ‘backness’). I like your poem by Sappho – I’m not a big poetry reader, but I have a copy of The Penguin Book of Women Poets and hers are some of the good ones.

Can I borrow your comments section to ask – does anyone know what has happened to Mrsd?

Hi Crit — thanks for stopping by. I’m amazed anyone still is, after all this time. :P I don’t know about mrsd. It looks like she deleted her blog. I wonder why.

Sappy and excited, Camille? Heh heh, then I achieved my goal in writing that post. ;) Congrats on your little girl on the way.
