In today’s paper

Happy 50th wedding anniversary to my tenth grade geometry teacher. Judging from the photo he’s still got the same toupee.

Apparently there’s going to be a revival of Inherit the Wind on Broadway, with Christopher Plummer as Clarence Darrow. What I wouldn’t give to see it!

How f*cked up is this??? A Republican senator is trying to block the nomination of a judge to a federal bench because she once presided at a gay commitment ceremony, yet it’s apparently okay for pedophiles to be legislators.

And a blurb from the errata page:

A story in Friday’s local section should have said murder suspect Andre Marcel Adams, not the victim, has a long and sometimes violent criminal record, including an assault on a man in a Livonia motel earlier this year.

Heh heh, like it’s not bad enough that he was murdered; they had to slander him as well. Good ole Ann Arbor News.

On the subject of Republicans still acting against gays, there’s this in the New York Times.

    NYT re gay repubs

It gives a good analysis of the difficulties for gays within the Republican party, in light of the Foley scandal. It touches on a lot of issues and is thoughtful.

Since my first reaction to news stories such as that of the judge being blocked based on her support of gay marriage, is more emotion-driven (picture a cartoon me with steam coming out my ears, hair standing on end, eyes bugging out, and loud WHAT! of outrage), it’s good to get a more grounded rational take.

I saw “Inherit the Wind” on TV years ago (I think Jack Lemmon was in it), and I loved it. It was so thought-provoking. I’ll have to read the play sometime.

Even better than the play (well, I’ve never read the play) is the transcript of the trial. I once wrote a term paper on the Scopes trial. It’s unbelievable. I mean, first of all, the defense lawyer (Darrow) called the prosecuting lawyer (Bryan) to the stand as a witness. A witness! And then Darrow proceeded to RIP Bryan to SHREDS with his scathing cross examination. Bryan died shortly after the trial, a broken man. And I’ve been fascinated by a) evolution and b) courtroom drama ever since. Thank you, 11th grade American history teacher!
