May I direct your attention

to a new website I just discovered? It’s called Left Behind at the Fishbowl and it’s absolutely marvelous. The Fishbowl, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the University of Michigan, is the main computing center on central campus, so-called because it’s an atrium kind of thing surrounded by glass. So this blogger goes to the Fishbowl and collects the trash papers that students leave behind at the printers, marks them up with mordant commentary, and posts them on the web. Steve and I were positively howling with laughter last night.

Painful laughter, though. It’s pretty depressing to think that our schools are turning out kids who can’t think and write any better than this. On the other hand, perhaps it’s a self-selecting group: the better thinkers and writers are less likely to leave their papers in the printers??? Let’s hope so.

But these are the reject pages! Maybe they fixed everything on the final copy they took away with them. OK, not too likely, but…maybe.

True, Sandy. However, I am morally certain that even if those girls had the wit to change “reparations” to “repairs” in the final draft of their letter to the landlord, they didn’t delete the whine about the refrigerator light not working.

I just finished grading work samples. Approximately 120 of them. I think I passed about ten. Maybe fifteen. And that’s only in reference to the benchmarks for their year–it’s not a very high standard.

But I don’t let it get me down–better to laugh than dispare!

I don’t know whether I should laugh or cry.
