May I direct your attention

to a new website I just discovered? It’s called Left Behind at the Fishbowl and it’s absolutely marvelous. The Fishbowl, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the University of Michigan, is the main computing center on central campus, so-called because it’s an atrium kind of thing surrounded by glass. So this blogger goes to the Fishbowl and collects the trash papers that students leave behind at the printers, marks them up with mordant commentary, and posts them on the web. Steve and I were positively howling with laughter last night.

Oh, crap!

I almost forgot about Banned Books Week! Boy, it sure doesn’t feel like a whole year ago that I read Catcher in the Rye.

Okay, looking at ALA’s list of the top ten most challenged books of the year, well, gee. The only one we have in the house (besides Catcher and I am NOT reading that again) is one from the Captain Underpants series. To be precise, Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets.

Does my idol have feet of clay???

Sigh. I think I might have discovered an anachronism in a Patrick O’Brian novel. From The Surgeon’s Mate, page 195:

Under pressure

After much soul-searching I finally succumbed to strongly-worded requests from two of my favorite lurkers (Hi, Mom! New addition to my family

I finished Liesl’s blog this morning. Now that it’s all done I can confess that this one gave me some nightmares along the way. It looks pretty simple, doesn’t it? But whoa, the composition of this one stretched me to the outer limits of my graphic design ability. Honestly, sometimes I feel like Donkey in the movie Shrek. You know: “Blue flower, red thorns, blue flower red thorns . . . this would be so much easier if I wasn’t colorblind!”

Happy birthday, world!

If you are celebrating Rosh Hashanah this weekend, I wish you a very happy one. This afternoon I and my family plan to stuff ourselves to the gills with these amazing apples dipped in honey. Shana tova!

Praise the Lord!

That was my friend Sarah’s response when I told her how good I’ve been feeling lately. I haven’t felt this good in ten and a half years. I have unbelievable (for me) energy; in fact, I’ve been averaging about 5 hours of sleep per night and I’m not at all tired. I feel like I’ve been born anew. My senses are alive, my brain is whirling, I’ve been thinking and writing and listening and feeling — feeling like myself again. Hello, Julie!
