Mishmash

Boy, if anyone actually reads this I will be shocked. I haven’t managed to visit one single other blog since we returned from camp. My blogroll is positively dusty. I am sorry about that. It’s not from lack of interest.

I have been working like crazy. Why do I do this to myself? I am my own boss. Except for the newsletters, I create my own deadlines. What’s to stop me from telling a client that I’ll send the next draft in three weeks instead of one? Well, two reasons: one, I love what I’m doing, absolutely love it, and two, if I’m on a tight deadline, sorry honey, can you put the kids to bed again tonight? ;)

And speaking of the kids, here’s a great parenting tip, discovered by yours truly last night while making dinner. Kids won’t eat their veggies? Cook them in a soup, and then puree it. They won’t know what they’re eating. And it’s much quicker and easier than baking the veggies in muffins. Last night my kids scarfed down a soup that — unbeknownst to them — contained mushrooms and summer squash! Now why did it take me ten years to think of this???

Here’s another parenting tip. This one only took me about fifteen minutes to discover. Ready? Here it is: don’t teach your kids how to make a “kazoo” with comb and wax paper. Even if, unlike mine, they have perfect pitch. Just don’t do it. Don’t.

On the, uh, literary front, I don’t have much to report, either. I did rotate the Patrick O’Brians, which, as I think I have previously mentioned, we keep scattered about the house so that there’s always one at hand in case we need a quick fix. The Far Side of the World (#10) had been in the upstairs bathroom for way too long, so I exchanged it for The Fortune of War (#6), which had been in the basement. For all you fans out there who have as much trouble as I do keeping track of which title goes with which plot, this is the one where the War of 1812 breaks out, and the Royal Navy, shockingly, loses three engagements in a row to those lousy upstart Yanks. Boo! Hiss! But finally the tide turns and the Shannon takes the Chesapeake in Boston Harbor. Huzzah! Be still my pounding heart!

Oh! and speaking of nautical fiction! During my last trip to the library with the kids, browsing in the youth department, I found the Arthur Ransome section! Swallows & Amazons! Yes, my interest in sailing stories goes waaaaay back! And the story is every bit as charming as it was when I was in 6th grade. And if that’s not enough? There are twelve novels in the series, heh heh.

Well, that’s it for now. I do hope to return to more regular blogging, and visiting. I have an idea for a new meme, too, so stay tuned . . .

Good to see a post from you. Ah, the wonder of bloglines – no matter how infrequently you post, I’ll read every one.

Welcome back! It’s amazing how busy we can get-especially when it’s self inflicted.

Boy oh boy, do I know what you mean about being too busy to blog! I think I have a total of about four (4) posts this month, and I’ve barely visited at all. I’m out of the loop. I’m glad you’re busy doing what you love– it’s a great thing, isn’t it? As much as I complain about my work, I love it too, and feel so lucky making a living at it. Well, some of the time. And I still am going to hire you to design my blog for me. One of these days. Right now it doesn’t seem worth it, as I have lost of my audience through my own negligence. And I will take your advice about the homemade kazoos– the thought makes me shudder. I have to remind myself, school. Starts. Monday.

Ah, I’m the opposite, I visit more frequently than I blog. I don’t often comment either, but I do my rounds most days, and see what everyone else has been up to. I should write more, I know, but like all of you, time is of the essence.

Pureeing (that spelling does not look correct!) veggies – brilliant! I will try this. I learn stuff from my friends who live in my computer.

You’ve been busy too, eh? Things are crazy around here.

Now you tell us about the veggies. If only I had picked up that little tip ten years ago.

What about the parenting tip of NOT demonstrating how well you (the parent) can armpit fart to children across whom’s mind the idea has not already passed?

p.s. proper grammar on the “whom?” Anyone?

  8. You’re also stuck w/ me as long as you have a blog, my net friend. :)
I hoped you were absent due to bourgeoning business.
I totally understand the self-imposed deadlines. It is hard being one’s own boss to give one slack, but when you’re getting a business off the ground I think you’ve chosen the right course of action as long as it is not burning you out or affecting family life.
