My husband Steve is the dearest, sweetest, funniest, person I’ve ever met. He is loving and supportive and considerate in every way, not to mention easy on the eyes! ;) Really, in all the important ways we are about as compatible as two people can be: our energy levels, our attitude towards money, our ideas about parenting, dream vacations, the things that matter, the things that don’t matter, all that good stuff.
And yet . . .
So, I walk into the room and greet my sweetie. He looks up from a fat paperback and says excitedly, “Honey, guess what! The crew from the future is about to show a laptop to Albert Einstein, with President Roosevelt and General Eisenhower looking on!”
I take a closer look at his book. It’s Weapons of Choice, by John Birmingham. Here’s what it says on the back:
In the year 2021, a military experiment thrusts an American-led multinational armada back to 1942, right into the middle of the U.S. naval task force speeding toward Midway Atoll. Shock is followed by jubilation at the time travelers’ awesome new firepower — this astonishing event will alter the course of World War II and forever change the rules of combat. But have other ships made the trip and fallen into the hands of the Japanese? What happens next is anybody’s guess — and everybody’s nightmare.
Steve’s enthusiasm over this literary masterpiece gets me giggling. I tell him I am going to blog about this, and I write down his “honey, guess what” quote on a piece of paper so I won’t forget. When I come back later to get the paper I discover that he’s added the following:
In fact, it’s a spell-binding roller-coaster ride through the drama and awesome implications of war and of human nature as the events and great figures of WWII embody them — a must-read for any history buff! (har-har)
Today is our wedding anniversary. Thank you, dear Steve, for thirteen wonderful years. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.
In a heartbeat!

I too am very fond of Steve ;-)
cheers

You two look(ed) so cute! Congratulations! :)
What a joyful picture - I love the expression on Steve’s face as he’s looking at you! Happy Anniversary!
Congratulations.
My husband doesn’t read anything embarrassing, but he never reads fiction at all. So it’s nice to see a man who engages in flights of fancy.
I’ve been meaning to read that book ‘cos he’s one of ours (and the fact that he commented here is a bit of a giggle) and ‘he died with a falafel in his hand’ was bloody funny.
LIke Veronica, my beloved doesn’t read much in the way of fiction. I got him to read most of ‘the left hand of darkness’ a year or so ago, but he never finished it. bastard. He prefers non-fiction.
I think that wonderful pictures says everything! I love it.
I think that’s the best wedding photo I have ever seen. Congrats!
Happy Anniversary! What a great picture…I hope you guys had a special day.
Happy anniversary!
Congratulations! I actually though of you guys yesterday and how cool it is to always have something (worthwhile) to do on July 4, like celebrate an anniversary. After the parade, we were at a loss.
Anyway, I, too love, the photo. But — and I hope you don’t recoil in horror at this but I suspect you might — those are starting to look like much younger folks in the photos than the two I know. Scary isn’t it? 13 years can’t be THAT long, can it? Yet, that photo is starting to have more of the nostalgic patina to it that my parents’ wedding photos do, than the cutting edge, into-the-future feel it must have had when you first held it.
and you know I only say this because MY 13th anniversary is only 26 days away. How ’bout I post a photo and you can tell me if I, too, am becoming an old married woman?!!
I am going to have to recommend that book to my husband–it sounds right up his alley.
Happy anniversary, Julie! That photo is wonderful.
Darling photo. You two glow. Happy Belated Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary!!!!!!
Thanks, all, for the good wishes!
Regarding JB: after a couple of emails back & forth I’m pretty sure that was really him. He left that comment not more than fifteen minutes after I posted. One for the Red Notebook, huh!
Blogo: Don’t kid yourself. We don’t just look cute: we are cute! And we’re still cute, despite what doulicia said. :)
Veronica and Crit: my sympathies. On the other hand you probably don’t have to fight over books with your spouses.
Doulicia, I know. 13 years and three kids later, some gray hair and a few extra pounds…! You on the other hand — and I’m trying to remember how long we’ve known each other, must be close to a decade — you on the other hand probably haven’t changed at all. (For those of you who don’t have the good fortune of being acquainted with doulicia in real life, she’s one of those who look old when they’re young and young when they’re old: ageless, in fact.)
I’d have to agree - that is, perhaps the BEST wedding photo I’ve ever seen. If I had to work another wedding, I’d enter into a time machine with Einstein and his pals and I’d work your wedding. I bet that was a wonderful day to be a part of. Happy Anniversary!
ROFL!! Happy Anniversary!
What a cool day to be married on! I wish I’d thought of it myself. :) Happy (late) Anniversary.
