Pearls before swine

My yard really wants to be a beautiful garden. It’s not like I’m trying and it’s fighting me every step of the way, like the yard at our previous house did.

Lately

I finished Esther. Whew! It was quite a ride.
So, Esther is this young woman full of radical modern ideas who falls in love with an Episcopalian priest.

Poetry Friday

I know, I know. It’s not Friday. Nor is it poetry. But somehow “Doggerel Saturday” just didn’t sound quite right.
Anyway, my dad suggested that we revisit the clerihew.

Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte, Gertie

Do those names ring a bell for you?
They’re the five sisters in the “All-of-a-Kind Family” books by Sydney Taylor. Hats off and much gratitude to Guusje, who reminded me of them.

Anecdote from a rainy afternoon

Lena: Mom! Come quick! Look!
Me: Oh wow! Look at that great big toad hopping up our sidewalk!
Lena: [suddenly worried] Oh no!
Me: It’s okay. The kitties are all in the house.

Panning Martha

It was great to get out last night and get together with my book group. We’re all moms of young kids and occasionally it happens that the energy level is a bit low on a Tuesday night.

Five things you cannot dispute:

Bamboo comes from a bamboo shoot,
Rutabaga comes from a rutabaga root,
Bananas are the funniest fruit,
Turtle always tells the truth, and
Toad looks funny in a bathing suit!
Guess what!
